about

The true story of the demonic possession of the Ursuline nuns at Loudon, France in 1634 by Father Urbain Grandier, and his subsequent judicial execution by fire at the hands of the Inquisition, as told in a 4 minute bluegrass song.

Aldous Huxley wrote the definitive book on the possessions with "The Devils of Loudon". Ken Russell made the definitive film with "The Devils". William Wallace brings you the definitive bluegrass song about the incident.

lyrics

Out you devil, out!
From the priest Urbain Grandier
And the Ursulines at Loudon
Who he thought to lead astray
They had concourse with the devil
Yeah, in Satan's arms they lay
Let the fire cleanse his spirit,
let us bow our heads and pray

Come Lucifer, come Astaroth,
Leviathan and all
Come Satan and Elimi
Beelzebub and Baal
Witness now this covenant
A seal laced with blood
To trample down the holy church
and sin against their God

In convulsions and contortions
The sisters lay in beds
Twisting wild and bent and screaming
Wrenching hair from off their heads
What devilry what magic
What maleficence what bliss!
To lay with Urbain Grandier
And find out what they’d missed

The matron of the abbey
Sister Jeanne, its often said
Though standing only four feet tall
Stretched seven feet in bed
The devil moved within her
And so did Grandier
None above him none below him
None beside him where they lay

Exorcizamus te, omnis
immundus spiritus
Oh, you grew up for the gallows
Red eyed, wild, insidious
What drove you from the priesthood
And what brought you to the snake?
Will he whisper words of comfort
When they burn you at the stake?

They scattered Urbain’s ashes
to the corners of the wind
And the nuns returned to habits
They indulged in now and then
But every time the wind
Whistles through the convent trees
They feel a little possessed
Between their bosom and their knees
